Diary Entry of January 20, 1872

Overview

R. told me he had dreamed of my steadiness, though his thoughts kept drifting into astronomical calculations. While I handled the children and he corrected proofs, Nietzsche arrived unexpectedly and delighted us with conversation about the future and school reform. His visit ended with him playing one of his compositions, giving the whole day a bright and stimulating turn.

Saturday, January 20:

R. tells me he dreamed of me and my steadfastness; then, however, perihelion and aphelion kept going through his mind. He works; I give the children lessons and then go for a walk with Fidi. Lusch goes to her piano lesson.

In the afternoon I am working with the children, and R. on his proofs. Prof. Nietzsche pays us a surprise visit, which pleases us very much.

Many things are discussed: plans for the future, school reform, etc.; he plays us his composition very beautifully.
