Wednesday, May 19:
Up late, very tired and worried, occupied as usual with the children and the embroidery. Before lunch R. plays for me what he has written and is delighted that several themes which date from the “Starnberg days,” and which we had jokingly earmarked for quartets and symphonies, have now found their niche: “Ewig war ich, ewig bin ich.” Great surge of joy at this coming together of life and art.
The children out trying on their herald costumes. I, alone in the house, realize with concern that my work will not be ready in time for the birthday. R. returns home late from his walk.
In the evening again considered the question of the birth of the new baby and the presence of the older children; I put consideration for Hans in the forefront, R. consideration for my comfort and well-being. We also talk about our servant Jakob; R. fears he is too much in the hands of the priests.
