Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 24, 1873

Overview

The day is filled with social obligations, business talk, and practical matters despite the wish for rest. Wagner receives visitors connected to patronage and concert finances, and the couple are encouraged by the seriousness and cultural range of one supporter. A dinner and additional visits leave them exhausted, with Wagner speaking out of fatigue rather than energy.

Friday, January 24:

An additional day here, in order to rest; but no rest is possible. First of all, there is a visit from Herr Zacharias, an enthusiastic businessman who intends to sell 20 certificates of patronage in Hamburg and speaks of the founding of a Northwest German Wagner Society. Following him comes the committee that arranged the concerts; they report receipts of 5,000 thalers and expenditure of 1,500 thalers.

In the afternoon we drive out to pay calls, and in the evening we have dinner with Herr and Frau Zacharias, whose fine and intelligently chosen library gives us great pleasure and arouses our confidence in this man’s participation, for he possesses all of R.’s works from the first editions onward. In the evening we see the Petersens once more, but we are very tired, and R. declares that he is talking too much out of pure weariness.
