Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 5, 1875

Overview

A blinding headache keeps her in bed all day, though she takes some grim amusement from Schopenhauer's notion that suffering can be educational. Meanwhile R. deals with a godfather request from a master cellarman named Wagner and with demands from Vienna and Berlin for Tristan und Isolde, which he is willing to grant only on his own terms.

Tuesday, January 5:

Spent the whole day in bed with a severe headache; great amusement over the fact that I am the first casualty of Schopenhauer as Educator; he recommends spending two hours now suffering!

R. has received a letter from a master cellarman in Deidesheim, asking him to be godfather to his child (his name is Wagner). Herbeck requests Tristan und Isolde for Vienna, and Niemann requests it for Berlin; R. is prepared to give it to the latter on condition that he himself be present at rehearsals, but the former he refuses.
