Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 12, 1876

Overview

R. rehearsed with Frau Materna in the morning and then achieved an indescribable impression with the third act of Götterdämmerung in the afternoon. The evening turned sour when he erupted at the Bruckners in the restaurant after they clumsily explained why they could not neglect an old customer, and he was then ashamed of how strongly he reacted. He ended by deciding not to return there, deeply hurt by the episode.
