Saturday, July 22:

A vague rumor brings the news that Hans may possibly come here! Rehearsal of the third act of Siegfried to the jubilation of all. R. tired.

At 11:20 in the evening I go to fetch Lusch. She has grown, and looks nice, strikingly like her father! R. wakes up as I come home, goes to the window, greets the constellation of the Great Bear, which is shining most beautifully. “Good star, protect my wife and my children, do with me what you will!” He tells me he has been thinking of his death. He embraces me tenderly, saying that nobody knows all the things he owes to me. He is pleased with Lusch.
