Monday, January 22:
R. is not well and gives me the attached paper and instructions to represent him at the conference between Herr Feustel and Herr Duflipp, who meet downstairs at 10:30. I join the gentlemen and note with astonishment that the councilor has no intention of making proposals of any sort; he says he has no idea whether the King still wants the performances, etc. Herr Feustel proposes that the cost of the deficit should be divided up between various patrons, who would then be approached.
Lunch with the gentlemen, along with the mayor and Herr Gross. Our good councilor does not emerge from his shell, and the purpose and point of his journey remain unclear to us. In the afternoon he tells R. that the King is hurt because R. did not thank him for sending the pictures at Christmas! ... He tells the mayor and Feustel that the King instructed him to demand the return of his money, and he has no intention of providing more.
