Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 14, 1869

Overview

Heavy rain and a fire frame a day of letters and unwelcome news. Dingelstedt's polished praise for Meistersinger astonishes Richard after the Jewish pamphlet, while Claire reports that Cosima may not recover her small capital. The King's unsuitable Beethoven picture darkens Richard's mood further before another evening with Don Quixote.

Thursday, October 14:

Raining heavily; a fire in the fireplace since early morning. R. has received an infinitely polite letter from Dingelstedt, telling him how pleased he is with Die Meistersinger! "It is incredible," R. says, "what such people will swallow, when one thinks of that note in the Jewish pamphlet!"

In the afternoon a letter from Claire, saying I shall probably not get my little bit of capital! Arrival of a picture of Beethoven, a present from the King of Bavaria. R. put in a very bad mood by it; first, his behavior, and then this unusable gift. In the evening Don Quixote.
