Saturday, October 23:
R. not well and Fidi again restless. World history with Lulu and pleased how quickly she learns, a gift certainly inherited from her father.
Very nice letter from Marie Muchanoff; she says that everything in Munich is in a state of complete confusion, that Wüllner cannot conduct Le Postillon, and so on. R. says jokingly he is glad, for if one had to assume that things are after all going well, that would be too bad. There is talk of closing down the school.
In the afternoon with Lusch to Countess B.’s because of the lessons, home on foot late in the evening, when it was very dark. R. in bed, a little dejected at my having been away so long.
Three letters came: one from Esser, one from Munich, anonymous, which says that Hans has had an affair with an actress whom he wanted to marry, then about how things look in the Munich theater, the lack of discipline and order. Then in Berlin two performances of Tannhäuser have yielded 200 thalers, “a pure gift,” says R.
In the evening R. gets up again, I bathe our little boy, then we read Don Quixote.
