Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 30, 1869

Overview

Cosima writes Claire while still thinking of Cervantes's life and connecting his fate with Richard's. She imagines Hans as perhaps the only one who could share her sense of what such beings mean to the world, though his willingness to suffer for Richard must remain unspoken. A town outing with two children and Don Quixote accompany Richard's declaration that he is nothing but concern for her and their little world.

Saturday, October 30:

Wrote to Claire while with the children; still thinking of Cervantes’s life, always in connection with R.’s fate. Perhaps Hans is the only person who shares the feelings which move me when I consider what such beings mean to the world and the world to them. I am certain he is willing to suffer for R.’s sake, but he cannot admit it to himself, and it all has to remain unspoken. How often my thoughts linger with the poor man!

In the afternoon to town with two of the children. In the evening Don Quixote. R. tells me today, “I am nothing but concern for you and our little world.”
