Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 15, 1869

Overview

Villa Capuana remains the central topic, with Richard writing Frau Lucca and Cosima writing Chaillou. A box from Milan delights Richard because he loves seeing Cosima in new clothes, and he greets her appearance as childlike joy. Pecht's misunderstanding of her earlier letter disappoints her, but Richard tells her simply to forget it before Plato in the evening.

Monday, November 15:

The main topic of conversation is still the Villa Capuana; R. writes to Frau Lucca and I to Chaillou. In the morning work with the children. Much joy about a box arriving from Milan; R. loves it best of all when I am wearing new clothes. When I come down to him toward evening: “The joy,” he says, “when you come in like that; you look like a child.”

With him to town; back home, I find the student and a letter from Pecht; then I have cause to regret ever having written to him. He has misunderstood me entirely and thinks I am assuming he would intervene on our behalf! R. tells me not to reply to him and also not even to regret having written to him, but just to “forget it.”

Read Plato in the evening.
