Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 17, 1869

Overview

A sleepless night gives way to work with the children, concern over Richard's continuing illness, and an afternoon visit to Countess Bassenheim. Plato's Meno is completed in the evening. Melancholy letters from Cosima's mother and Claire lead Richard to speak about Aristophanes and comedy as the clash between will and idea.

Content

Wednesday, November 17:

Sleepless night of musing. Worked with the children. R. unfortunately still not well.

In the afternoon to Countess Bassenheim. In the evening completed Meno.

Letter from Mama, very melancholy, and from Claire; the latter tells me she is reading Aristophanes, which causes R. to talk about him. The conflict between will and idea produces the tremendous comedy.
