Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 1, 1878

Overview

Richard works after a better night, and the day is made bearable by his relative well-being despite domestic troubles and dismal political talk. News that Rheingold is drawing full houses in Vienna surprises them, and the evening’s reading and music criticism keep their focus on art rather than public life.

Content

Friday, March 1:

R. works; he had a better night. I have some domestic difficulties to contend with, but it can all be borne cheerfully when R. is well. News from Vienna that Das Rheingold is a great success, bringing full houses; we find this difficult to explain; memories of Jauner, “head over heels,” as R. calls him, always in a fever of excitement and never knowing what is going on!

In the evening Waverley, and also looked at some new songs by R. Franz, finding little in them to enjoy. The debates in the Reichstag more and more deplorable.
