Monday, November 29:
Boni ill, not dangerously, but weak. The foehn has returned and is making us feel wretched. R. indisposed, but works all the same.
After lunch talked much with Pohl, brought the conversation around to Hans, of whom he knew nothing definite; I saw he was vexed with him, so I did a lot of talking and made myself very melancholy thereby! God grant him the noble ability to recognize the felicity of suffering, and grant me the consolation of seeing his child, my Lulu, one day become a joy and consolation to him! If things go right with you, my child, a fine, heavenly task will perhaps be assigned to you one day: fulfill it!
R. then played Pohl and me the first scene of his third act. This always affects me terribly. The student does geography with Lulu. I heard something which made me truly glad. Pohl told me that Dohm had fled to Weimar nine months ago because of his debts, so he is no longer editing Kladderadatsch. This proves that it was not he who permitted those nasty things to be printed about me; that was a relief. Abuse matters little, but what meant much to me was that someone whom I had always known and acknowledged to be a decent person had suddenly become vile.
In the evening slight vexation because of too much talk, and R. always prefers doing something.
