Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 15, 1881

Overview

Wagner worked through some physical discomfort, and the two walked in the palace gardens talking warmly about Brandt's productive visit. The evening was quietly domestic — Cosima read aloud from Gobineau's "Gamber-Ali" — and she noted with satisfaction that the committee had revised the Bülow fund language to honor Wagner's wish that it benefit his children.

Content

Saturday, January 15:

R. had a good night and does some work; but at lunch he is feeling some discomfort. It is very cold, but all the same we go for a walk in the palace gardens, talking a lot about Brandt, whose visit has pleased him very much.

In the evening I read Gobineau’s story “Gamber-Ali” aloud. Friend Feustel has sent me the minutes of the committee meeting, and I am pleased to see an alteration in the final paragraph which will enable R.’s wish to be fulfilled, namely, that the Bülow fund should go to his children. Lengthy examination of the map of Asia with R. after the story reading.
