Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 14, 1881

Overview

The party returned to Bayreuth after an early morning departure, with Herr Neumann's payment of their tickets prompting much teasing from Richard. Though welcomed by children and friends, the homecoming was tempered by a chest spasm that struck Richard immediately upon arrival, and the evening's mood was dampened by a vexing letter from Herr Batz before company and conversation gradually lifted spirits.

When someone mentions the Saxon royal family, he says, “They are all worse than just ghosts - they are the descendants of ghosts.” But a letter from Herr Batz vexes him greatly; he has to reply to it, and thus our evening has a subdued beginning; but spirits are gradually raised and news exchanged.
