Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 22, 1881

Overview

A payment of 40,000 marks from Dr. Strecker arrived, prompting Richard to offer money to everyone around him in high spirits. Liszt arrived that afternoon looking far healthier than anticipated, and Richard warmly urged him to settle in Bayreuth permanently—though he compared his father-in-law's need for independence to another famously restless acquaintance.

Thursday, September 22:

R. receives 40,000 marks from Dr. Strecker today and offers us all money!

At 5 o’clock my father arrives; R., I, and everyone else at the station. He looks much better than we had anticipated; R. tries very cordially to persuade him to remain with us permanently, and concludes, “But you are exactly like Kohler-you must have your freedom.”

(His describing the snuffbox I gave him on August 25 as the work of an amateur is for me another sign of that perspicacity I always find so astonishing in him.)
