Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 30, 1882

Overview

The journey into Tyrol brings chance greetings, mixed concern over family matters, and renewed distaste for the Munich landscape. By evening, theatergoing and Lenbach's company soften the travel fatigue without erasing the uncertainties ahead.

Sunday, April 30:

in Tirol. At one of the stations R. is greeted joyfully by a Herr Gehring, a violist in the Dresden orchestra whom he appointed! Concern over Boni’s reserved manner. Looking at the clean houses, “this is our way of doing things,” he says. The country around Munich disheartening, as always! Arrival at 2; the conductor comes to meet us; Herr v. Biirkel calls on us; it is uncertain whether the King will attend the performances. To the theater with the children. Around the World in 80 Days, bad play, badly acted. Lenbach is with us, and R. finds him pleasant company, while to me he remains as invaluable as ever. Springlike air.
