Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 14, 1870

Overview

Wagner works while Cosima’s white gown prompts him to identify her with Thekla and with the models for what is finest in his imagination. Fidi’s hoarseness still worries her, but Wagner’s play with the children fills the house with warmth. News of Hans conducting in Florence and a rain-soaked town trip complete a day that remains cheerful despite weather and concern.

Saturday, May 14:

R. at work, I visit him in a white gown, he laughs and says, “The White Lady, or, rather, Thekla, since for all fine things I have you as model; that’s why I am happy; you knew I could be helped.” Fidi is unfortunately still hoarse. R. romps around a lot with the children, who are really very sweet. In the newspaper I read that Hans has conducted a concert in Florence. To town with R.; a terrible rainstorm, over which we just laugh, however.
