Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 16, 1869

Overview

Richard's good sleep feels to Cosima like reunion, and the morning turns to Mme Viardot's response to the Jewish pamphlet. Cosima drafts lines for Richard to send, writes to Loulou and Mathilde, walks with Loldi, and worries over a too-fine gold pen nib ordered from New York. The day is quiet but emotionally charged by fatigue, correspondence, and thoughts of the children.

Content

Tuesday, March 16:

R. slept well! At such times it is like a reunion after long separation. He brings upstairs with him a letter from Mme Viardot about the Jewish pamphlet! This nonsense, or this profound sense! She is a Jewess, that is now quite clear.

When I tell R. I should like to write to her, he asks me to draft a few lines; these he finds good, and in fact, he copies them out. Then he goes to his work. I write to Loulou.

A walk in the garden with Loldi; thought of the children! The evening is devoted to talk with R., since he is still too tired to undertake anything. Late in the evening wrote to Mathilde.

I had ordered a gold pen for R. from New York, but the nib was too fine; that caused me a little worry.
