Franz Liszt to Richard Wagner
Undated
In this very brief note Liszt says Wagner's letter has struck him like a thunderbolt and that tears prevent him from reading further. He responds only with an emotional tribute, calling Wagner wholly unique and implying that the letter's full meaning is known best to Wagner himself.
Let me tell you that tears prevent me from reading on. Oh, you are unique of your kind! It has struck me like a thunderbolt. Heavens, what have you written to me there? You alone know it!
