Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Hans von Bülow

September 19, 1850 · Zurich

Overview

Wagner urges Hans von Bülow to stand firm, read and forward Wagner's letter to his mother, and come to Zurich immediately. He says Liszt will also help, money can be managed if necessary, but hesitation or surrender would disappoint him.

Letter

Be brave, Hans, stand firm and all will come right! Send the letter on to your mother. Read it first and then you will know my opinion. At the same time I am sending Liszt a letter; he will do his part. Come at once, and don't take a long time thinking about it. If you can, bring some money with you for yourself, but if not we must manage without. But if you mean to waste time giving in and hesitating I shall not be pleased with you and you can stay away altogether! You see I have become a boorish Swiss that will not fit in with your rigid student code at all!
