Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Karl Klindworth

November 1, 1856 · Zurich

Overview

Writing to Klindworth, Wagner says Liszt has studied and played through Klindworth's arrangements with great interest and is making small corrections while awaiting the promised third act. Wagner reports improved health after three convivial weeks with Liszt and promises to send remaining Rheingold sketches with the first act of Siegfried during the winter.

Letter

Liszt took the greatest interest in your splendid arrangements; he read and played them all through with the utmost care, taking them away with him to alter certain minutiae, and is daily awaiting, as am I, the third act promised by you.

I am passably well, have caroused with Liszt for three weeks (without intoxication) and hope to keep him with me some time yet. You shall have whatever further rough sketches for The Rhinegold I can scrape together when I send you the first act of Siegfried, which shall be some time this winter, at any rate!
