Die Walküre

Act 3: Wotan's Farewell

Wotan Farewell!
You fearless,
Glorious child!
You, my heart's
Most hallowed pride!
Farewell! Farewell! Farewell!
Must I forsake you,
And must now the warmth of
My greeting not greet you?
Shall you no longer
Beside me ride,
No mead at meal you'll bear me!
Must I now lose you,
When I so love you,
You laughing delight
Of my eye?
A bridal fire for you shall burn,
Like never before has burned!
Fire and fury
Will roar 'round the crag!
Its devouring terror repels the timid;
The coward flees Brünnhilde's rock!
For one alone
Frees the bride:
One freer than I,
The god!
These eyes' luminous pair,
Which oft I smilingly would kiss,
When courage won a kiss as a tribute,
When childish babbling of heroes' praise
From lovely lips you lisped...
These eyes' radiant pair,
That oft in storm for me shined!
Through hopeful yearning, when my heart was searing,
When worldly delights my desires would flee to,
From wild, spiraling worries...
For the last time, let me today
Have a closing farewell's final kiss!
A fortunate man will
See these stars shine!
An unfortunate immortal,
Must leave, and see them closed.
And so turns the god away from you,
My kiss...
Takes the godhead...
From you!
Loge, hear!
Listen here!
How first you I found, as fiery glow,
And how you escaped, a wandering flame!
You I bound,
I bind you today!
Arise, flickering flame!
Encircle with fire the rock!
Loge!
Loge! Appear!
Whom my spear's...
Tip...
Frightens!
Can transverse...
The fire...
Not!
