Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 29, 1875

Overview

After a violent thunderstorm, the weather settles into a fine autumn calm, even as correspondence continues to absorb R. and friendship occupies the narrator. The afternoon walk with all the children becomes unexpectedly vivid and cheerful, from the vaults and coopers at the Angermann concern to the cows, dogs, and distant light in the cave.

Content

Sunday, August 29:

Fine autumnal weather after a violent thunderstorm. R. busy with correspondence and I with friendship.

On Monday the 30th, our friends have another meal with us, and on Tuesday the 31st, they leave us, to our great sorrow.

In the afternoon we go for a walk with all the children in dull weather; the sky clears, and we walk as far as the vaults of the Angermann concern, a complete Teniers picture. We sit down near the huge gate, “Ouasimodd” brings us filled glasses from the deepest depths; up above, a sort of window is opened sideways. We see barrels standing on top of one another, coopers walking to and fro; the children run into the cave, from the end of which a distant light is shining. Outside in the meadows cows are grazing, beside us the three dogs. Very cheerful homeward journey.
