Sunday, October 10:
Quiet morning; we discuss peacefully and in detail the question which recently so upset us, and I write to Claire, asking her to attend to my little bit of business, namely to obtain for me the 40,000 francs my mother owes me, so that I can set it aside in an insurance company for the two elder children.
Lunch with the children, with a christening cake. Then took a walk with R. to the little chapel; at the same time a farewell to Nature, everything is yellow, the sky overcast, the air, however, mild.
We talk about Schopenhauer's rage against the veneration of women, and R. says laughingly that he can just imagine how he felt, with all his youthful passion and the problems occupying him, having to listen to all the intellectual chatter in his mother's home, knowing that his whole fortune was being dissipated on these junkets and he would have to write for money.
There is a letter from Nau in the Musikalische Zeitung which displeases R. greatly; he thanks the pupils of the music school and at the same time praises all his fellow teachers, Perfall, etc., though he has repeatedly written here to say that everything is thoroughly wretched and bad. Now in Heaven's name!
