Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 6, 1880

Overview

The family had another quiet day indoors because erysipelas returned and Eva came down with acute rheumatism. In the evening I read aloud from Chancellor Muller’s Goethe, and R. enjoyed it enough to savor its contempt for other people’s opinions. Even confinement felt lighter when we could share ideas we both liked.

Tuesday, January 6:

A good night, but the erysipelas reappearing, and in Eva the acute rheumatism! So once again confined to our rooms; in the evening I read aloud passages from Chancellor Müller’s Goethe, which I started on the journey and which I recommended strongly to R.; he also takes pleasure in it, and we are particularly delighted by the remark about the worthlessness of other people’s ideas.
