Sunday, April 11:
In the morning a package of newspapers, forwarded by Mme Flaxland. Much nonsense and much Jewish stuff. R. writes to Hans, but does not show me his letter. The children to church with Hermine.
Afterward coffee with the children, a letter from Hans reporting nothing but bad things from Munich; on top of that a letter from Paul von Pels, formerly Prince Taxis, who wants an appointment of some kind and, in order to secure it, tells us a lot of gossip!
At three o’clock a boat trip with the three little ones and R., and on our return found a tree in full blossom.
In the evening occupied ourselves with Frederick the Great. Before that a short talk with Hermine, who seems loyal and attached.
Contemplated the four children as they slept and blessed them. A lovely starry night. Nature laughs; my heart weeps. “Fate is unmerciful, Man but little.”
In Paris efforts are now being made to deny and thwart the success of Rienzi.
