Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Franz Liszt

Undated

Overview

Wagner worries that Liszt may not have received his previous letter, since Liszt has not referred to several practical points contained in it. He asks to be told at once if the letter is missing so that he can resend the added bar for Lohengrin and make sure the intended cut and other details are not lost before the general rehearsal.

Letter

At this moment, dearest friend, after having closed the letter already, I begin to feel a doubt whether you have received my last letter, which I sent you about eighteen days ago.

I am uncertain because you make no mention of its contents: a letter from me to Zigesar; one bar of music (full score), which was to be added at the end of Lohengrin's tale in Act III; the cut I want in this scene, namely the omission of the second part of Lohengrin's tale, which you also do not mention and which I assume you agree to; and my request that you send me a proof of the libretto, now too late.

If you have not received this letter, kindly let me know at once, because in that case I should like to send you the aforementioned additional bar, which might still arrive in time for the general rehearsal.
