Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Franz Liszt

August 23, 1851

Overview

Wagner writes only to say that Liszt has understood Lohengrin correctly while Stahr has not. He withdraws the approval he had hastily given to Stahr's interpretation and promises a fuller explanation soon.

Letter

Dear Liszt,

Two words only. You have understood Lohengrin aright; Stahr has not. I withdraw my consent to his opinion; it was given in haste. You will soon hear more from me, best of all men!
