Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Theodore Apel

October 2, 1835 · Magdeburg

Overview

Wagner tells Apel that the Magdeburg opera has burdened him with exhausting practical responsibilities. He reports that the company has finally opened with Zampa, achieving a substantial result that gives him some relief.

Letter

I have got myself into a terrible whirlpool of work and drudgery here. All our opera-house affairs are hung about my neck. Yesterday at last we got going for the first time with Zampa, and the results may really be called considerable. In this respect I am getting some peace at last.
