Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Franz Liszt

September 6, 1848 · Dresden

Overview

Wagner thanks Liszt for his efforts on his behalf and reports that the planned performance of Tannhauser has been delayed. He explains that Tichatschek's illness and prior obligations to the star singer Formes will likely postpone the opera for about a week, and he sends regards to Princess Wittgenstein.

Letter

Best of friends,

Cordial greetings, and best thanks for the many and manifold troubles you have taken on my behalf. I had promised Princess Wittgenstein news as to the performance of my Tannhäuser; but I cannot for the present give you any other than that the opera will not be performed either Sunday or Monday, as I had promised, owing chiefly to the indisposition of Tichatschek.

Even if he were well, it could not take place, as we have first of all to satisfy a star, Formes. Probably Tannhäuser will not be possible till about a week later. In any case I hope soon to see you again, and am glad accordingly. May I ask you to remember me to the Princess?
